Cake for Everyone!

After this years trip we had a little get together to share stories, and talk about our next mission trip to Chimbote. It was great to see everyone again! We also had some fun drawing the three winning tickets for our fundraiser.

Bathrooms? 8 (They were clean but different from the USA)
Sleeping arrangements? 8 (Beds were hard but better than the dirt floor)
Would you come back again with our group? 10 ABSOLUTELY

Bed Delivery / Home Health Assessments, what did you think? Didn’t get to attend these but would LOVE to next time.
Did you feel safe in Chimbote? 8 just because anything can happen anywhere with anyone.

This experience was AMAZING and I would love to go back and with more experience because I can do my homework with all the kinds of illness’ and medication options. This definately made me want to devote more of my life to people less fortunate and try to give as much as I can. I was not only touched by these people but learned the meaning to life and to appreciate what we have here at home in the USA. I saw this one little boy who had a tumor in his neck that was nearly the size of a tennis ball and his disposition was so positive and he just smiled and acted as if nothing was wrong. He made me want to do more next time I go back. The other kids would glow when we would give them American candy and a tiny toy and would smile ear to ear to see us. The people there in Chimbote welcomed us and were so appreciative and I came back with a meaning in my life and that is to care for the less fortunate.

Beds Program in Action

Today’s picture was shared by Jerry Cassidy ( Far Right ). Jerry is a student at Globe University and volunteer for the 2012 mission. On the far left is Jenni Larson, Jenni is the Medical Assistant Program Chair at the Globe University and joined us on this years trip.

Our public health missions offer medical students the opportunity to visit other countries and gain first hand experience about public health conditions abroad.

On this years trip future nurses and medical assistants participated from the Globe University in Minnesota. Over the last two missions the Globe students have proven to be qualified and compassionate care givers.

In the above picture our volunteers are delivering a bed and frame for a family in Chimbote. This year we distributed 25 beds. Our budget per bed is $150.00 which includes a bed frame, sheets, pillow, pillow case and blanket.

St Rita’s from Cottage Grove, MN. generously donated $3,000.00 for this years beds program.

It takes a team to make things happen and we are blessed to have so many supporters.

Back in Minnesota…

The team made it back to Minnesota on Monday. Our mission survey’s have gone out and from the first reply I am happy to post this comment from one of our volunteers who gave us a great report card.

Gabriel said… This was a great experience and I hope to come back next year after graduation when I have a real job. Delivering beds was really fun and you could tell that people were really happy leaving the clinic even if all they got was some Tylenol. The group worked together really well as a team. I would definitely do this again, and recommend it to the classes behind me. Gabriel

Chimbote Update…

October 6, 2012 Main Comments Off

After 2 days of clinic in Chimbote… The group traveled about an hour into the mountains and conducted an additional day of clinic. On Thursday the group delivered bed’s and did in home health assessments. Though communications have been excellent. I have had no picture updates for a few days.. We will have to work on this for the next mission.

The group finished up all mission duties on Friday morning. They departed for Lima Friday afternoon. They should have made it to Lima around 8 PM. While in Lima the group will be staying in Miraflores. Saturday is a free day. Tours of Lima, shopping and dining out are now the order of the day as the group will depart Lima and return to Minneapolis on Monday afternoon.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

02/01/2012 A Message from our Executive Director

This year’s trip was a very emotional and eye opening experience for myself and the rest of our group.
The women and children were coming for medical reasons, but also many came for a glass of water. When a mother comes with their child and the child has not had water for two days, and we offer a glass of water, it breaks my heart as a mother to know the difficultly in helping your child to meet the basic needs of survival.
For many, water comes from a contaminated river they wash clothes, cook with, and bath in. Many of the people would purchase drinking water if they were able to afford it. Many can not and can not go without. They drink what they have. Please help us to support them on future missions.

02-03-11 Manos de la Caridad, would like to welcome back Tanya, our "Executive Director," who has just returned from a week mission in Arequipa, Peru. Tanya, assisted the San Francisco De Asis Sonrisa Program. Tanya, worked with children in post op care and educated families on care instructions for their children after surgery.

This trip also allowed Manos de la Caridad, to introduce its first educational video set. The set was created for the Peruvian culture and contained education on cleft lip and palate care and treatment after surgery. The families of the patients were most grateful for the education. The doctors were excited for the educational opportunities that could benefit the many children and families, who needed education after cleft lip and palate surgery. The video sets were used in Arequipa, as well as Lima, for over 100 patients. Great job Tanya and welcome back!

5K Fun Walk/Run
